The Danger of a single story is common all over the world. Stereotypes are created for many things. Racism plays a major factor in stereotypical judgements, but the source, "Girl" shows me who really is most effected by the single story. The single story is that girls are to do all cooking, cleaning, caring for kids and husband and to be a stay-at-home mom. The one thing you know about the person is the one thing you say to others about that person. The single story. Instead of knowing the background of someone for example, if their family is poor you assume they are poor. If the girl had sexual activity with one person she is judged upon that and not who she really is or what really happened. Girls have so much expectations to keep up with and especially this girl in the source. Not only do you need to find a man, you need to make sure he likes you but not do anything that can create a name for yourself. You also can't lose that man creating another different name for yourself. On line 23 and 24 it says, "behave in the presence of men who don't know you very well, and this way they wont recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming." This girl's expectations were to keep a man, treat a man right and somehow her single story is that she is a slut. Now when you think of this girl or describe her to someone the only thing you say is that she is a slut. This poor girl's single story is their stereotypical views for girls who had a boyfriend but doesn't anymore. The danger of the single story creates unwanted complications in someones life, just by judging on what others may think. Do you think single stories still take place? Where do they most commonly take place?
Single stories do still take place but we refer to them as assumptions or misconceptions. They most often take place in settings with large groups such as school, sports, or sometimes even the workplace. These single stories are the product of environments where there are too many people to get to know each one on a personal level so you hear one thing about said person and that is how you decide what you think about that person. But does anyone believe that you can control the production of single stories or as humans our brains just naturally try to finish the puzzle and make assumptions off of the information we have already been given?

ReplyDeleteI do think single stories take place. It happens every single day and we probable don't even realize it. Single stories can happen anywhere, but probably in schools I believe you would see them most because a lot of schools have a diverse amount of kids in them.
ReplyDeleteThroughout history peoples search for the truth has lead to the downfall of many long standing single stories; however, sadly some are still present in today's society. Although women have broke the mold of the perfect housewife by going out into the workforce, they are not seen in the same light as their male counterparts. For example, when many people hear the word athlete they automatically think of basketball players, such as Stephen Curry, but forget about women such as Serena Williams. This being because we have always been taught that men are the athletic ones playing on the field, while women cheer in the stands. Do you think the fact that the media covers more male sporting events than female events is the reason this single story about athletics still exists?
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe single stories still take place today. As a matter of fact everyday. Single stories can take place in between schools, cliques, or specifically about a certain topic. Single stories can be towards people or even a place like a country or even just a town. For example, Winslow Township has the reputation of being ghetto and trashy. When people talk about it, they often speak negative and down on it when in reality you haven't put yourself in ones shoes who does live and experience it.
ReplyDeleteSingle stories take place all the time. It is a part is another horrible part if the world we live in. Calling the 'misconceptions' is like calling the trail of tears a nature walk. We've all formed a single story of someone at one point or another. We've mostly do it at school. The only thing we can do is learn from our mistakes of doing them and try to better ourselves in the future.
